A chance conversation with the local Postmistress opened up the way for them to open the gallery in a room which had previously been used for storage. Gradually the business has become established and flourishing – so from small beginnings displaying Gordon’s artwork, the gallery now houses the art and craft of several local artists in different disciplines complementary to one another, plus a range of Gordon’s limited edition prints and hand-made cards.

The extension of the gallery in October 2007 into the adjoining room makes for a larger gallery with the added feature of a mediaeval fireplace. As this room was formerly part of the Post Office house, this fireplace has never been viewed publicly before and its imposing façade provides a fascinating backdrop to the contemporary artwork.

The launch of the website in November 2007 took Gallery Upstairs far beyond the reaches of Blanchland and the beautiful North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England! Many visitors from all parts of the world visit Blanchland – Alaska, Hawaii and New Zealand, to name a few far flung places recorded in the gallery visitors’ book. Now, thanks to the world wide web, Gallery Upstairs can come to them!
