Inspired by traditional French and Scottish colourists, he works quite rapidly in watercolour to achieve spontaneity and a sense of loose reality. His subjects range from the rugged landscape of the North Pennines to other landscapes and seascapes, together with more figurative work including still life and portraits.

Although Gordon had been painting since boyhood, it was only after an illness in his 40s that he decided to make a career move by going to study art at college, gaining a Distinction in HND Fine Art.

Gordon has been a professional, full time artist since 1998.

In 2005 a 4 week taster watercolour class was run in the local village of Edmundbyers and was so successful that Gordon now runs 4 10 week sessions per year for evening and afternoon adult groups.

Enterprise workshops in local Northumberland middle and high schools have given Gordon the opportunity to share his skills as an artist and entrepreneur with young people looking ahead to life after school.

Gordon has also worked with First School & High School pupils sharing his watercolour expertise.
